Three to Get Ready for January 16, 2026

Bad News First

The news can be overwhelming, but it can also inform, inspire, and focus our engagement. Let’s gird our loins and take a quick peek.

  1. Historians, political scientists and legal experts have sounded the alarm, with some saying the United States has reached authoritarianism,” according to a review of the president’s actions in 2025.
  2. A resolution aiming to prevent further U.S. military action in Venezuela has failed in the Senate, after two GOP Senators flipped their votes, requiring the vice president to cast a tie-breaking vote.
  3. Native Americans, who are U.S. citizens by statute, are reportedly being detained in the course of ICE operations in Minnesota.

But Here’s the Good News

Encouraging developments don’t always make the headlines, but good news can provide us with hope and momentum, so let’s take heart!

  1. Congressional spending bills are reversing many of the deep cuts requested by the president, with more generous funding for foreign aid, global health, scientific research, the arts, and more.
  2. Federal courts have dismissed an attempt to block redistricting in California, as well as U.S. Department Justice requests for voter information in California and Oregon.
  3. One day after the the Department of Health and Human Services cancelled $2 billion in mental health and substance abuse funding, the White House apparently reversed the cuts.

And Here’s What You Can Do

Even small efforts have the potential to ripple out in ways we don’t expect. Plus, doing good is good for you. Give it a try and see.

  1. Consider making a donation to Minnesota mutual aid efforts, some of which can be found here and here.
  2. If you’re bolstered by the news of court wins for democracy, take a look at ACLU’s 2025 report and consider a donation.
  3. Is there a social, recreational, or charitable org you’ve been thinking about joining? Now’s a good time to build local connections.
