Three to Get Ready for May 16, 2026

Bad News First

The news can be disheartening, but it can also inspire or focus our engagement. Let’s gird our loins and take a quick peek.

  1. Some of the nation’s biggest polluters have been granted a pass.
  2. Despite courts repeatedly putting the kibosh on this sort of thing, the vice president announced the suspension of $1.3 billion in Medicaid payments to California.
  3. Results of the president’s China trip were “way below expectations.” Defense Secretary Hegseth is abruptly withdrawing troops from NATO ally Poland. And another War Powers vote on Iran failed in the Senate, this time by one vote.

But Here’s the Good News

Encouraging developments don’t always make the headlines. But good things are happening every day, so let's celebrate!

  1. The Senate Parliamentarian has blocked $70 billion in ICE and CBP spending from the pending reconciliation bill.
  2. During future federal government shutdowns, Senators will not receive paychecks.
  3. A new law in Hawaii redefines corporations to preclude corporate spending in elections.
