Three things you should know about the U.S. government. Three reasons to believe things can get better. Three things you can do to help. Three times a week. Let’s go!

Bad News First
The bad news can be overwhelming, but it can also strengthen our resolve. Let’s take just a teeny tiny peek before we move on to the good stuff.
- As military assets are being deployed to the Persian Gulf, President Trump is threatening “bad things” will happen to Iran unless the country agrees to limit development of nuclear capabilities.
- At the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace, Trump, who granted himself authority to control the organization indefinitely, pledged $10 billion from the U.S. government, in the absence of congressional appropriation.
- An order issued by the Department of Homeland Security says that lawful refugees who do not yet have permanent U.S. residency can be arrested and detained.
But Here’s the Good News
The good news is so big it made the actual headlines today! Take a moment to celebrate before the naysayers have time to write their little think pieces.
- The United States Supreme Court has struck down “emergency” tariffs issued by executive order. More on the emerging implications here.
- In a strongly worded opinion, a federal district court judge has ruled that thousands of immigrants detained nationwide must be provided with a hearing or immediately released.
- In two quick reversals of federal policy, a rule impacting veterans’ eligibility for disability was abandoned and FDA will review Moderna’s flu application for a new flu vaccine. (P.S. This is not normal.)
And Here’s What You Can Do
Action is contagious. Challenge yourself to do something (anything!) for democracy ... and tell a friend.
- Follow Veterans for Peace on Facebook or Instagram to learn more about their efforts.
- Find out whether ICE is planning a detention facility near you and reach out to your federal, state, and local representatives to express your concerns about human rights and infrastructure impacts.
- Encourage your Senators and Congressperson to boycott next week’s State of the Union to join Democratic leaders for this alternative livestream.
