Three to Get Ready for January 26, 2023

Bad News First

The news can be disheartening, but it can also inspire or focus our engagement. Let’s gird our loins and take a quick peek.

  1. Another U.S. citizen was shot and killed by ICE officers in broad daylight on the streets of Minneapolis, with video from multiple angles and witness testimony directly contradicting the government’s immediate and coordinated falsities.
  2. Soon after the shooting, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi sent a letter to Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz, suggesting that the solution to violence triggered by ICE enforcement is for the state share the records of welfare recipients, repeal state sanctuary policies, and allow access to the state’s voter roles.
  3. Lawful Minnesota immigrants are being removed from their homes and flown to detention facilities in Texas, where they are being re-interviewed and their cases re-examined.

But Here’s the Good News

Just because it didn't go viral doesn't mean it didn't happen. Take heart in some good news.

  1. The shooting of Alex Pretti, and/or the government’s characterization of what happened, drew criticism and/or condemnation from sources including the Wall Street Journal, the NRA, the Libertarian National Committee Chair, the NBA Players Association, a nurses’ union, and some high-profile Republicans, even triggering the resignation of the GOP candidate for governor in Minnesota.
  2. Senate Democrats vowed to oppose funding for the Department of Homeland Security, increasing the chance of a partial government shutdown at the end of this week.
  3. While ICE quietly frees some detained families, a Minnesota judge has ordered the release of ICE detainees arrested without warrants.

And Here’s What You Can Do

Even small efforts have the potential to ripple out in ways we don’t expect. Plus, doing good is good for you. Give something a try!
