Bad News First

The news can be disheartening, but it can also inspire or focus our engagement. Let’s gird our loins and take a quick peek.

1. The president has agreed to drop his $10 billion lawsuit against … himself in exchange for a $1.776 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund” intended to compensate “patriots” who were “illegally targeted by the Democrat-lead [sic] law enforcement agencies.” House Democrats are attempting to block it. Liz Oyer explains why.
2. The president’s latest financial disclosure reveals what would appear to be conflicted transactions, although the Trump Organization says the president had no role in them.
3. Even as the Department of Education re-hires staff, the Department of Health and Human Services is laying off and reclassifying employees to make them easier to fire.

But Here’s the Good News

Encouraging developments don’t always make the headlines. But good things are happening. Let's make more happen!

1. Thousands of protesters marched in support of Black political representation. This past weekend. In 2026. (The good part is that people have so quickly mobilized in response to redistricting.)
2. The immigration detention center known as Alligator Alcatraz is closing.
3. The Senate Parliamentarian removed funding for the White House ballroom from the reconciliation bill.

And Here’s What You Can Do

Even small efforts have the potential to ripple out in ways we don’t expect. Plus, doing good is sure better than doing nothing!

1. Take a look at the Citizens’ Impeachment Courage Candidate endorsements and find someone to support.
2. If you’re discouraged about Dems’ prospects for flipping the House, check out Swing Left efforts in Senate and state-level races.
3. Let your federal representatives know you don’t want federal dollars used for a corrupt Anti-Weaponization fund that undermines the rule of law. (Also, how about some oversight of conflicted financial transactions? Please?)
