Bad News First

Let's focus on how the Supreme Court is impacting federal governance.

1. The U.S. Supreme Court removed limits on coordination of campaign spending between candidates and their political parties, opening the doors to even greater influence by rich donors, who can give more to committees than to candidates.
2. The Supreme Court ruled that presidents can now fire the heads of independent government agencies without cause, with the exception of the head of the Federal Reserve.
3. The Supreme Court held that the administration can end temporary protected status for immigrants fleeing Haiti and Syria (and that green card holders may be rejected from re-entry to the U.S. if agents have “reason to believe” they committed a qualifying offense–a lower standard than previously applied).

But Here’s the Good News

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

1. The Supreme Court struck down an executive order declaring that certain people born in the United States are not American citizens.
2. The Supreme Court decided upheld a state law providing that mail-in ballots posted by Election Day must be counted if received within five days of the election. (In the lower courts, judges rejected DOJ attempts to access voter data in Pennsylvania and New Hampshire.)
3. The Supreme Court found that the constitution protects citizens’ cellphone location data from warrantless searches by law enforcement.

1. Ask your congressional representative to protect Haitian and Syrian immigrants from expulsion.
2. Help the Democratic National Party with voter protection efforts, like poll watching, ballot curing, or voter hotlines.
3. Remember Rock the Vote? It’s still a thing, and now they have 30 years of experience. Pass the link on to a young voter or support their work.
