Three to Get Ready for July 23, 2026

Bad News First

The news can be disheartening, but it can also focus our engagement. Let’s gird our loins and take a quick peek.

  1. This week, we learned of four additional confirmed deaths among U.S. service members in the Iran war. Meanwhile, the administration is both minimizing and delaying reports of casualties.
  2. A court of appeals has issued an unusual stay of lower court orders to provide bond hearings to immigrants in detention. Meanwhile, a federal immigration judge who granted a hearing and bond to a high profile detainee was labeled “activist” and fired.
  3. The administration announced plans to shift federal funding for scientific research away from universities and toward individuals and private companies. Meanwhile, The American Association of University Professors issued a report detailing how the administration is using research funding to exert control over university policy.

But Here’s the Good News

Encouraging developments don’t always show up in the headlines. But they happen every day, so let's take a good look.

  1. The House of Representatives passed a resolution seeking to halt military action in Iran and voted down a provision that would codify the president’s executive order preventing transgender individuals from serving in the military. Two Democratic representatives introduced a bill intended to bar political contributions from foreign-owned or influenced companies.
  2. In the Senate, Republicans are growing “increasingly concerned” about the Iran war, although a war resolution vote failed to pass.
  3. A federal judge ruled that the administration could not fire a FEMA official without following established civil service procedures for removing “inferior officers.”

And Here’s What You Can Do

Even small efforts have the potential to ripple out in ways we don’t expect. Plus, doing good is good for you.

  1. Over 1,000 protests are on deck for this week. Do any work for you?
  2. If protests are not for you, 50501 made a list of 7 ways to fight ICE without even leaving your home.
  3. Join Sen. Mark Warner in a July 27 webinar on protecting this year’s elections.
