Three to Get Ready for May 13, 2026

Bad News First

The news can be disheartening, but it can also inspire or focus our engagement. Let’s gird our loins and take a quick peek.

  1. New intelligence indicates that Iran maintains operational access to most of its missile sites, launchers, and underground facilities.
  2. Meanwhile, the president isn’t taking into account the war’s impact on Americans’ finances, “not even a little bit.”
  3. I normally don’t pay any mind to what’s happening on Truth Social, but this seems pretty bad, right? And this? Like, maybe it’s time to take someone’s phone (and nuclear codes) away?

But Here’s the Good News

Encouraging developments don’t always make the headlines. But good things are happening, so take heart!

  1. Five South Carolina Republican state Senators joined Democrats to vote down a proposal to redistrict the state, despite pressure from the White House.
  2. Republicans on Capitol Hill were critical of the Iran war as they questioned officials about the administration’s $1.45 trillion defense budget proposal.
  3. A federal judge in Rhode Island has just about had it with DOJ misrepresentations and forum shopping.

And Here’s What You Can Do

Even small efforts have the potential to ripple out in ways we don’t expect. Plus, doing good is good for you.

  1. Take a look at the NYT’s recently updated Autocracy Index.
  2. The Reconciliation Bill to fund ICE and Border Patrol without reforms is still in play and now it includes money for the ballroom. Let your Republican reps know what you think.
  3. Support is weakening for the war in Iran. Keep up the pressure!
