Three to Get Ready for May 8, 2026

Bad News First

The news can be disheartening, but it can also focus our engagement. Let’s gird our loins and take a quick peek.

  1. Deeply disappointing redistricting news from Virginia, Tennessee, and elsewhere.
  2. Satellite images and leaked CIA analysis indicate the war in Iran is not going as well as we’ve been told.
  3. The CDC fired every full-time cruise ship sanitation inspector and now we have a hantavirus problem.

But Here’s the Good News

Encouraging developments don’t always show up in the headlines. But good things are happening, I swear!

  1. A judge ruled that DOGE’s cancellation of $100 million in grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities was unconstitutional and a second appeals court has now rejected the administration’s policy of holding immigrant detainees without bond.
  2. The Court of International Trade struck down the president’s second round of worldwide tariffs.
  3. Democratic lawmakers are investigating whether the president is granting pay-for-play pardons.

And Here’s What You Can Do

Doing something is always better than doing nothing, right?

  1. Follow NAACP’s lead on the redistricting fight and support their work.
  2. Take an online class on empowered resistance May 13 or 27 to learn how to be less stressed and more focused on action. (Sliding scale registration fee applies.)
  3. Have a look at this Choose Democracy page on how to fight authoritarianism and see what works for you.
