Three to Get Ready for July 6, 2026

Bad News First

The news can be disheartening, but it can also inspire or focus our engagement. Let’s gird our loins and take a quick peek.

  1. The Executive Branch is defying Congress’s power of the purse, particularly with respect to foreign aid.
  2. 14 states have moved forward with their own versions of the SAVE Act (which has stalled in Congress).
  3. Homeland Security internal investigators tracked down and “warned” two private individuals that one’s email and the other’s Instagram post “MAY BE IN VIOLATION OF FEDERAL LAW.” (TBD if courts will agree.)

But Here’s the Good News

Encouraging developments don’t always make the headlines. But good things are happening, so buck up!

  1. Yet another federal appeals court has ruled the federal government can’t detain undocumented immigrants for more than 90 days without a bond hearing.
  2. The president’s approval rating is down and blue voter turnout is up.
  3. Ding Dong, DOGE is officially dead.

And Here’s What You Can Do

Even small efforts have the potential to ripple out in ways we don’t expect. Plus, doing good is good for you.

  1. Sign up for Indivisible’s Immigrant Justice Summer Training series of five calls running from July 9 to August 17.
  2. If you think the separation of church and state should still be a thing, comment by July 12 on the Presidential Religious Liberty Commission’s draft report. More info here.
  3. If you’re wondering how you can protect democracy, here are loads of ideas, with time estimates. Pick one and give it a try.
