Three to Get Ready for January 9, 2026

Bad News First

The news can be disheartening, but it can also inspire or focus our engagement. Let’s gird our loins and take a quick peek.

  1. In what was then the latest in a series of shootings by ICE officers, Minneapolis driver Renee Good was killed in broad daylight while being recorded by observers at multiple angles, providing a stark counterpoint to the administration’s description of the tragic event, and triggering nationwide protests.
  2. By Executive Order, the United States withdrew from 66 international organizations, including U.N. entities focusing on climate, labor, migration, and other issues the administration considers contrary to U.S. interests.
  3. Revenue resulting from the sale of 30 to 50 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil will be deposited in U.S.-controlled accounts, which the president says he will control.

But Here’s the Good News

Bad news drives clicks, so encouraging developments don’t always show up in the headlines. But good things are happening every day, like these:

  1. Yesterday, 39 Republicans broke with their party and voted with Democrats on a variety of legislative action, relating to military action in Venezuela, extension of ACA premium subsidies, reservation of tribal land in Florida, and a Colorado water project.
  2. Following persistent protests, Avelo Airlines has withdrawn from participation in ICE deportations and following a boycott, Spotify has ceased running ICE recruitment ads.
  3. Another federal judge has found that another acting U.S. Attorney is unlawfully serving in his role.

And Here’s What You Can Do

Even small efforts have the potential to ripple out in ways we don’t expect. Plus, doing good is good for you.

  1. THIS WEEKEND: Participate in an “ICE Out for Good” protest in your area.
  2. Explore the resources provided by the Immigrant Defense Network and consider supporting their work.
  3. For daily (M-F) action ideas and encouragement, subscribe to Jess Craven’s newsletter, “Chop Wood, Carry Water.”
