Bad News First
The news can be disheartening, but it can also focus our efforts.
- The situation for immigrant children in detention is bleak, and growing bleaker.
- In just 19 states for which data is available, more than one million children have lost SNAP food assistance over the past year, as a result of provisions in last summer’s reconciliation bill. Loss of SNAP or Medicaid benefits can lead to loss of free school lunch this fall.
- Cuts in U.S. foreign aid have resulted in 77,000 fewer children receiving HIV treatment worldwide.
But Here’s the Good News
Even though kids can't vote, people are standing up for and with them.
- Texas Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives are asking why the administration is planning to move unaccompanied minors from around the country to Texas, and how the children will access legal representation.
- Illinois has a new law designed to help immigrant children begin court proceedings for legal protection while in federal custody.
- A nun in Texas is attending immigration hearings to accompany and pray for the children who arrive from a nearby shelter in white vans.
And Here’s What You Can Do
Everyone can do something.
- Explore whether you might become a Volunteer Child Advocate with the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights.
- Support No Kid Hungry or your local food bank.
- Unicef helps children in need around the world.
