Bad News First
The news can be disheartening, but it can also inspire or focus our engagement. Let’s gird our loins and take a quick peek.
- The Pentagon would like Congress to appropriate an additional $200 billion (with a b) for the (undeclared by Congress) war in Iran.
- An immigration officer revealed in a federal court proceeding that more than 100 asylum seekers were wrongfully deported despite an order barring them from removal, news the judge found “extremely troubling.”
- In sworn testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that the FBI is buying Americans’ location data from commercial purveyors.
But Here’s the Good News
Standing up, fighting back, walking out. Look what people can do!
- The people of the Twin Cities in Minnesota will be honored with the prestigious John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award.
- A small town in Georgia is slowing down the conversion of a massive warehouse into an ICE detention center by cutting off water and sewer services to the site.
- Democrats on the House Oversight Committee walked out of a briefing by Attorney General Pam Bondi, who refused to to say whether she would comply with a pending subpoena to testify under oath.
And Here’s What You Can Do
Doing good is contagious, so do something and tell somebody. Hint: Tell me so I can cheer you on!
- It could not be easier to email your Hill reps than it is via Democracy.io. Reach out today re: your views on funding the war in Iran, or whatever else is on your mind.
- An upcoming vote on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) may be a key opportunity to demand limits on federal mass surveillance. Here’s an explainer, phone script, and call link.
- No Kings is about a week away. Now’s the time to get prepped and inspired! If marching isn’t your thing, how about a water/snack/sign donation? Email local organizers or send supplies with a friend who’s attending.
