Bad News First
The news can be disheartening, but it can also inspire or focus our engagement. Let’s close one eye and take a quick peek.
- The president maintains he is not required to obtain congressional approval for the war in Iran, despite expiration of the 60-day limit in the War Powers Act, because he has declared a ceasefire. If that doesn’t work, he also thinks the requirement is unconstitutional.
- This week’s Supreme Court Decision in Louisiana v. Callais has reenergized GOP redistricting efforts that could further disenfranchise voters of color.
- The president’s sons continue to partner with companies capitalizing on U.S. government military investment.
But Here’s the Good News
Don't give up. People are out there making good things happen by saying NO. Look!
- The 14 FEMA employees suspended last year for signing a public letter of dissent have been reinstated.
- The president once again had no choice but to withdraw his (second) nominee for Surgeon General.
- Protestors rallied across the country on May Day. Remember, just because you didn’t see it on the news doesn’t mean it didn’t happen!
And Here’s What You Can Do
Even small efforts have the potential to ripple out in ways we don’t expect. Plus, doing good is good for you.
- If the Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais has you riled up (or just plain depressed), take a look at this social media toolkit or this one and see how you can help build momentum for change.
- With public support waning, this might be a good time for you to take a look at Leaving MAGA and share with someone who is disillusioned, but needs support.
- If you’ve been skipping the local portions of your ballot, read this quick article on the impact of local government and resolve to vote local in the next election.
