Three to Get Ready for May 5, 2026

Bad News First

The news can be disheartening, but it can also help focus our engagement. Let’s take a little peek.

  1. Departing from past practice, the Supreme Court has quickly certified its decision in Louisiana v. Callais, “spawning chaos” per dissenting Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.
  2. The DOJ has demanded the names of employees and volunteers in Fulton County, Georgia who worked the 2020 presidential election.
  3. The United States and Iran are exchanging fire in the Straight of Hormuz, but U.S. officials say the ceasefire is not over and Republicans on Capitol Hill seem to be on board, mostly.

But Here’s the Good News

Encouraging developments don’t always make the headlines. But good things are happening, so let's keep going!

  1. The United States Senate is not subject to redistricting, which puts the slim GOP Senate majority at risk.
  2. A state commission is recommending that Illinois law enforcement investigate federal immigration agents for potential criminal charges.
  3. Senate and House Democrats stood their ground for months, forcing Republicans to eventually carve Border Protection and ICE out of the Homeland Security funding bill.

And Here’s What You Can Do

Even small efforts have the potential to ripple out in ways we don’t expect. Plus, doing good is good for you.

  1. An Action Library pick has won a Pulitzer Prize! We the People: A History of the U.S. Constitution.
  2. What are you doing June 6? How about joining a nearby Visibility Brigade on an overpass for an hour or so?
  3. Read this article to remind yourself that an executive branch refusing to comply with federal district court rulings is not normal.
