Three to Get Ready for June 24, 2026

Bad News First

The news can be disheartening, but it can also focus our engagement. Let’s take a quick peek.

  1. The administration is threatening to withhold Homeland Security funding from states unless they make it more difficult to vote.
  2. A federal appeals court reinstated the administration’s policy extending use of fast-track deportations.
  3. After a violent attack on an ICE detention center in which an officer was shot and wounded, 8 activists alleged to be “antifa” were convicted of terrorism-related charges.

But Here’s the Good News

Encouraging developments don’t always make the headlines. But good things are happening, like these!

  1. A nonbinding resolution directing the president to remove military forces from Iran passed both houses of Congress.
  2. A federal judge has vacated selected ICE policies nationwide, reinstating limitations on arrests at immigration courthouses and limiting detention in short-term cells to 72 hours.
  3. With bipartisan support, Congress has passed a housing bill, which the president is expected to sign.

And Here’s What You Can Do

Have you done a democracy good deed this month? There's still time!

  1. Take your pick of these easy actions to protect voting rights, courtesy of the League of Women Voters.
  2. Direct LGBTQ+ young people to OutVote for information and engagement opportunities.
  3. Celebrate America’s 250th with a summer read recommended for the occasion by PBS Books, Katie Couric, or TIME.
